Remote Organisational Agility Workshop

The purpose of this workshop is to uncover the goals, motivations and mechanisms for an organisations move towards increasing agility.

Prior to the workshop happening each person is asked “Why is <<organisation x>> pursuing greater agility”

With the output from each persons individual reflections during the workshop we increasingly build up a picture of:

  • What– This is about what we want want to achieve as an organisation, the out come you desire. Or another way of putting it is “What we want to be different as a result of undertaking this initiative”.
    • This could be something like “Increased Customer Satisfaction
  • Why – The motivation for this undertaking. You may also see here leading indicators of success, i.e. those things you can measure which lead you to believe you are going to achieve the outcome you desire.
    • An example could be “Our customers are being drawn away by disruptive start-ups
  • How – This is about the mechanism or means that support getting to the outcome. How will people have to behave differently in order to achieve your outcome, in a way that supports your Why.
    • An example could be “Increased Development Team face to face interaction with users
  • Who – These are the groups of people that will have to undertake the critical behaviour changes outlined in the How section.
    • An example could be “Line Managers

Tooling

We use Zoom for this remote workshop and break everyone into pairs in their own Zoom Breakout Room. We also use Google Jamboard or Miro to help everyone collate their responses, although this can quite easily be done via e-mail or Google Docs to.

If you have issues accessing tools it can be facilitated via email with each pair

STEP 1

We begin with the facilitator providing an overview of the workshop

STEP 2

We begin with a varient the “1-2-4-All” liberating structure. Having already asked people to think through the their answers to the question “Why is <<organisation x>> pursuing greater agility” we skip straight to the second step.

Each pair will have 8 Minutes in their Breakout room with 5 things to do

  • Agree on who will scribe and who will be sharing their results
  • Share what they have done prior to the workshop with each other
  • Reflect on any differences in what they are sharing
  • Generate new ideas in pairs
  • Group what they have under
    • What
    • Why
    • How
    • Who

STEP 3

We now bring everyone back into the main room, thank them and explain Step 3.

This Step will involve people breaking out again but this time we will merge the pairs into groups of 4 where they will go through the same process again.

This time they will have 10 minutes.

  • Agree on who will scribe and who will be sharing their results
  • Share what they have done prior to the workshop with each other
  • Reflect on any differences in what they are sharing
  • Generate new ideas as a group
  • Group what they have under
    • What
    • Why
    • How
    • Who

STEP 4

When their time is up and everyone is back in the main room each group of four spends upto 5 minutes talking through what they have produced.

STEP 5

We now split into 3 groups and each take a section to refine down to 3-5 unique items. How this is done is down to the group, they have 8 minutes (but can finish early).

STEP 6

Each group plays back their consolidation to the whole group.

STEP 7

Finally we align the WHO to the HOW as a whole group.
