Meet Your Trainer

My journey towards becoming a Product Agility expert began with the standard Scrum Alliance courses based on the teachings of Jeff Sutherland and Ken Schwaber. I worked as a team member in Scrum Teams and believed I had reached the end of my Scrum journey. However, when I attempted an Agile Project Management course, it turned out to be a forgettable learning experience.

Feeling disheartened by the agile world, I was recommended a book called “Scaling Agile and Lean Development” by Craig Larman and Bas Vodde, which helped me forget Agile Project Management and fully embrace Product Agility.

Since then, I have focused on experimenting with ways to balance an organisation’s desire for control, collaboration, and innovation to untap the true potential of Product Agility. This has involved educating, coaching, and leading organisational transformations to move from traditional technology organisations with broken supply and demand models to organisations that move beyond this ineffective model towards the intersection of Product Management and Agility – Product Agility. 

The growth of people to be effective in achieving organisational and personal goals is the critical catalyst for success. Coaching, training, and mentoring people at all levels of the organisation are key components of this approach.

As the host of the Product Agility Podcast, I get to learn from industry experts from both the worlds of Product and Agile. All of this learning I love to share all with my audience and factor it into every engagement, talk and article I write or contribute towards.

What is LeSS?

Large-Scale Scrum (LeSS) is a framework for scaling agile development to multiple teams.

LeSS builds on top of the Scrum principles such as empiricism, cross-functional self-managing teams of multi-skilled people, and provides a framework for applying that at scale.

It provides simple structural rules and guidelines on how to adopt Scrum in large product development.

LeSS principles

The LeSS rules and the LeSS complete diagram define the LeSS Framework. But the rules are minimalistic and do not give answers as to how best to apply LeSS in your specific context.

The LeSS principles provide the basis for making those decisions.

The ten LeSS Principles guided us in creating LeSS and they should guide you when you are implementing LeSS.

LeSS Adoption

LeSS adoption involves big organisations and many minds with deeply rooted assumptions about how organizations should work.

Successful adoption requires breaking assumptions and changing structure, with all the explosive politics and “loss of face” across a big group.

Adoption needs everyone to improve towards a shared goal.

Role of Managers in LeSS

LeSS requires a different type of management than traditional management OF controlling subordinates. It is much more aligned with the “Managers as Teachers” principle promoted in Lean Thinking:

  • Self-managing teams delegates a lot of responsibilities to the team.
  • Product Owners decide on what the work is that the team works on.

What’s the Most Important Insight for a Senior Manager to Understand About LeSS?

That it is not a practice or process.

LeSS is NOT a way to make Projects in Product Development be delivered on time, within budget and to a pre-defined Scope.

Instead, LeSS is an organisational design which impacts group structures, hierarchy, site strategy, roles, positions, processes, and basic policies (such as budgeting, career path, and rewards) and is perfect for growth organisations (those that have a growth mindset, not just those that want to grow!).

Organisational design is the proper remit of executive management, so you must act to learn and lead a successful LeSS adoption. This is not something you can “phone in” your support for or delegate to mid-level management.

A second critical understanding is that this change involves both Product Management and R&D (or “business” and “IT”) together, and so heads of both groups will want to attend together.

As highlighted in The Fifth Discipline — by MIT Sloan School of Business professor Peter Senge and named by the Harvard Business Review as one of the seminal management books of the past 75 years — a critical skill for leadership is Systems Thinking, which is also a cornerstone principle of LeSS.

Therefore, a significant part of the course focuses on active learning to apply Systems Thinking to your organizational system and a LeSS adoption, with Causal Loop Modelling in small groups working together.

For this learning experience there are no rigid prerequisites for attending this training. However, as this is an intermediate-level course for practitioners, delegates should have 6 months of agile experience. Instead, we will build upon the knowledge you already have working with agile teams.

Total attendance and participation are mandatory. The trainer will formally assess delegates to meet the certification criteria throughout the course

Over two days, this interactive in-person course runs from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm OR 14:00-18:15 (UK). We allow for regular breaks throughout each day. Please note that each course date’s start and finish times refer to the GMT zone.

Our virtual learning environment is made up of Zoom and Miro and high levels of collaboration to help you along your learning journey.

Pre-work is provided ahead of the course via email and the student workbook.

All participants will be Certified LeSS Basics and will get an account on the website. Here they can find additional information about LeSS, share course information and stay in contact with the other course participants.

Although there is no official Certified LeSS Basics exam, the course trainer determines the appropriate means for retention of the learning outcomes. Depending on your provider, there may be some assessment to earn certification. For example, we assess participation, activity, and understanding conveyed via exercises and discussion, withholding certificates when appropriate.
